How the Calculation Works

The battery storage calculator determines the optimal storage capacity based on several factors:

Basic Calculation

The base capacity is determined from two rules of thumb:

  • 1 kWh per 1,000 kWh annual consumption - The more you consume, the more storage is worthwhile
  • 1 kWh per kWp PV capacity - Storage size should match system size

Adjustment Factors

The following factors influence the recommended storage size:

Evening usage +20% capacity
Daytime usage -20% capacity
EV charging +50% of daily charge amount
Heat pump +2 kWh base addition
Home office -15% (more direct consumption)
Backup power +30% reserve

Typical Recommendations

Household Size PV System Recommended Storage
2-3 persons 5-7 kWp 5-8 kWh
4-5 persons 8-10 kWp 8-12 kWh
With EV 10+ kWp 12-15 kWh
With heat pump 10+ kWp 10-15 kWh

Example: A 4-person household with an 8 kWp PV system and 5,000 kWh annual consumption typically needs an 8-10 kWh storage.
